Collection of Personal Data
Many web sites will collect the visitor’s personal data. Normally the data include name, telephone number, address and e-mail address…etc.. But only a few web sites will notified the individuals concerned of the matter about the purposes of collecting such data and displayed a Personal Information Collection Statement required by the Ordinance. If they sell the data base to tried-party, it is haven’t any safeguard to the visitors.

Cookies
Some web sites are using “cookies” to get the personal data of the visitor. Cookies are written by a Web site on a visitor’s hard drive. When the visitor returns to that Web site, the Web server requests the ID number from the cookie and uses it to access the data stored by that server on that visitor.
It is provided especially for the web site to search the visitor and can compile a file of personal data of any individuals. The Web site can then use these data to display personalized information, and they may offer this information to advertisers without the knowledge of their visitors.

Search engines
Some of search engines (eg:Google) remember the search data of users according to I.P. address. It is possible for someone to find out the users interests or plans based on the keywords have been searching for on a search engine.

Collection of Personal Data
For Businesses: Do not allow staff to go to this kind web site and do not allow them to reveal confidential information to there.

For Individuals: Try to do not reveal confidential information to there or investigate the web site before giveing information, sure there is believable.


Block Cookies
For Businesses: set up some of security policy into the company's server to block all the cookies and keep the server safety.

For Individuals: blocked Cookies in the browsers, increase privacy and reduce tracking by advertising; install some software for anti-spyware to protect the computer; delete cookie files after using computer.

Search Engines
For Businesses: Provide more training and make sure all the staff are understand how to protect information.

For Individuals: choose the search engines which can believable or which promise will not keep user data.

  1. Cookies are not exactly unethical, but it is unethical when a business is able to combine cookies from multiple web sites to build a comprehensive profile of a user's behavior and interests. The online advertising network Doubleclick planned to do this back in 2001 but were prevented due to privacy concerns.

    It may not be feasible to block cookies since many web sites won't function properly if cookies are disabled.

    You may also say that businesses should adopt opt-in model of information collection. This means they must wait for the user to give their consent/permission to use their data for marketing purposes by ticking on a box rather than checking all the boxes for them beforehand.

    For search engines, companies may acccidentally upload customer information which is later indexed and included in search engine results. This would be an example of unethical violation that businesses may unknowingly commit.
